Our Projects

Ongoing Projects and Development Initiatives

2022

Education
  • Infrastructure Upgrades: Renovation of existing schools and construction of a proposed secondary school in Waria LLG are underway.

  • Support for Learning: The district is working to improve facilities such as classrooms, staff houses, and school logistics. Two colleges in Wau Urban continue to serve the region’s youth, with growing needs for support and expansion.

Health
  • Renovation of Health Facilities: Several aid posts across Waria, Wau Rural, and Wau Urban are undergoing or require renovation. The Wau Health Centre is under maintenance while other posts lack manpower and medical supplies.

  • Improving Access: Communities still walk up to 6 hours to access health care. Efforts are ongoing to improve local aid post operations and expand access in remote villages.

Infrastructure
  • Airstrip Upgrades: The Wau Airstrip, once international during the gold rush, is under upgrade to accommodate commercial aircraft like the Dash 8 — a key move for economic activity.

  • Road Connectivity: With poor road access being a barrier to services, road improvement projects are a priority.

  • Government Offices: Government station upgrades in Waria and Wau Rural are needed, while Wau Urban’s station is functioning but also requires improvements.

Law & Order
  • Community Policing: The district has deployed 102 peace officers, 40 community police officers, and 63 village court officials to manage law and order.

  • Justice Access Expansion: Plans are underway to establish more police and legal facilities to address high rates of crime and improve justice delivery at the community level.

Inclusive Development

The district is committed to “leaving no one behind” in its development journey. Key inclusivity-focused efforts include:

  • Support for People Living with Disabilities (PLWDs): Data from the district’s baseline survey highlights the urgent need for physical and mental health services for PLWDs, especially in Waria and Wau Rural. Ongoing efforts aim to improve access to health care, education, and mobility-friendly infrastructure in these areas.

  • Gender & Youth Empowerment: Women’s groups and youth cooperatives have been supported to run small-scale projects in agriculture, trade, and advocacy. These community-driven groups are critical to promoting equality and sustainability.

Administrative Strengthening

Functioning Government Stations: Each LLG — Waria, Wau Rural, and Wau Urban — hosts a government station. Renovation and capacity building are underway, particularly in Waria and Wau Rural where infrastructure is deteriorating and under-resourced.

Coordination Between Political and Administrative Wings: The district is working to reduce overlap between political leadership and administrative planning to ensure efficient and transparent delivery of services.

Local Level Governments (LLGs)
  • Waria LLG: Focused on improving aid post services, expanding water access, and supporting local cooperatives like the Alai Landowner Association.

  • Wau Rural LLG: Hosting over 100 active economic projects, this LLG has been a major focus for infrastructure, SME training, and educational outreach.

  • Wau Urban LLG: With better infrastructure than its rural counterparts, projects here focus on maintaining and expanding educational institutions, supporting the condemned Wau Health Centre.
