Promoting Peace, Protecting Communities

Wau-Waria District is blessed with natural resources, fertile land, and enterprising communities. Agriculture and mining remain the backbone of the district’s economy, while micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and community cooperatives are emerging as powerful drivers of self-reliance and local development. The district’s economic strategy focuses on unlocking the full potential of its people by supporting traditional livelihoods and nurturing new income-generating opportunities.

Justice System

Wau-Waria’s grassroots justice system is built on 63 village court officials and 102 peace officers who mediate local disputes and uphold customary law. Their efforts are essential in areas where formal courts or police presence are absent. However, they require more legal training, logistical support, and coordination with formal law enforcement to function effectively.

Correctional Services

Currently, Wau-Waria does not have a correctional facility. Offenders must be transferred to neighboring districts, causing delays and overcrowding elsewhere. This highlights the urgent need for a local holding or rehabilitation center, especially as crime rates grow and repeat offenses become more common.

Crime Overview

The district has seen a rise in various law-and-order issues, including:

1) Illicit drug use and distribution 2) Land ownership conflicts 3) Sexual and domestic violence 4) Theft, robbery, and vandalism

These issues are particularly prevalent in Wau Urban and Wau Rural LLGs, where urbanization and economic pressure have led to increased criminal activity.

Police Services

Police presence in Wau-Waria is limited and under-equipped, especially in rural wards. There is a critical need for:

1) More trained officers 2) Vehicles and communication tools 3) Family and Sexual Violence (FSV) Units to support survivors of gender-based violence

Despite resource limitations, police continue to work with village leaders and community officers to maintain basic security.
